This, I believe, is an 'unofficial' rallye (read semi-legal). I did, however
see a spot about it last year on Ch. 4 news. Winning car made the
3200 (approx) mile run in about 36 hours with an average speed of about 85.
That means that a late model car will have its puny 85mph speedo pegged most
of the time - far out! If I remember correctly, last years winner drove a
big Mercedes (surprise, surprise). I'm pretty sure that the rallye is run in
the spring some time, so there is plenty of time to prepare.
Any takers????

Have any of you read about the Cannonball 500 which originally ran about 1970? That was a run from Manhattan to LA (or someplace in CA) and the only rules were that you had to have a four wheel vehical and that most of them had to stay on the ground. I didn't see the Burt Reynolds movie which was a remake of the original movie about this race but the original did follow the paperback version fairly well as written by Brock Yates (The guy who started the madness!). Anyway I don't know what the actual times were or what the new times might be now but we are talking about a coast to coast trip in around 36 hours! I will have to check my copy of Sunday Driver by Brock Yates in which he tells the tale of this event in one of the latter chapters----it's great reading! My ex-room mate from college came from Connecticut. he showed me a newsletter from the 'Lock, Stock, and Barrel' in somewhere in CT where the REAL 'Sea to Shining Sea' rallye begins. Half the things Burt did a year later in the movie were in the news letter. If any interested net.landers are in that area, they might try checking it out. There seems to be at least some net interest in this kind of stuff (2 teams worth anyway). MSMiller GR Concord, MA
