I just bought a set of tires. The tread was gone. Thus the dumb question ... Where does all the rubber that gets worn off the tires go? There must be a lot of it lost each year. ...WIN!burl!lda

Concerning the plaintive cry, "Where do all the tires go?" In the air. It seems that a major source of particulate air pollution is the microscopic rubber that results from tires on pavement.... *hack* *koff*, Dave Ihnat ihuxx!ignatz

It appears that there is a sort of bacteria which thrives around highways and city streets. It feeds on - you guessed it - tire rubber! Sounds like some kind of strange SF story, but it's apparently true.
