[net.auto] GM in racing?

wookie (12/07/82)

It seems that General Motors management has made internal statements
about racing (The last statement was made in 1927!) although they are
not letting it out publicly. Anyway I think performance is back and
we can look forward to some interesting cars to come out in the 80s.

Cadillac will go all front drive by 85.

Pontiac and Olds will drop the X cars by 85.

Buick and Olds will grant a reprieve for the good old full size car
in 85 with Chevy following in 86.

A new C car at Buick, Olds, Cadillac in 84 (front drive luxury model)

two seater at Pontiac in 84 and Buick 86-87.

Camaro and Firebird will go front drive in 87-88.

And for you porformance buffs ala 60s take a look at the new Chevy
Monte Carlo SS coming in January! This thing is supposed to take
over NASCAR and you can buy a rather performance version of it.
175bhp engine, 9.5:1 compression, 5.0 litre V8, high lift long
duration cam, high stall speed automatic, and 3.42 rear axle.

And because the new Mustang with its good old 302 (5.0litre) engine
is blowing the Camaro and Firebird with the 305 into the weeds Gm is
bringing back the 350 V8 (5.7litre).

The International Race of Champions may be back next year with Chevy
ready to put up $250,000 per show for four one hour programs. Seems
the $250,000 at a televised race is better advertising than $400,000
for a 30 second spot on the superbowl. So maybe we'll see some
exciting racing with the best drivers!
