The December issue of Road & Track has an article about the spread of anti-55 legislation on page 52. Some interesting points : Arizona, Montana, Nevada, and Utah have a $5.00 "energy wastage" fine for speeds over 55 and up to their old pre '74 limits. Thus they are enforcing 55 and meet the federal govts requirements. As of March '82 23 states had legislation under consideration. Seven were looking at the token $5.00 fine, six were looking at discarding points on tickets between 55 and 65 or 70 and 11 just plain wanted to lift the limit. FHWA administrator Raymond Barnhart Jr indicated that 39.8 to 46.0% of drivers exceed 55 Official compliance figures put 41.3% of Californians as exceeding the limit while Linda Morshed, consultant to the Assembly Transportation Committee says it is closer to 60% in reality. Can anybody get a copy of "55 MPH Economy Study, The Effectiveness of the 55 MPH National Speed Limit as a Lifesaving Benefit??? These are from the Department of Transportation and might give us some cold, hard, and of course, biased facts! Well anyway there are some documented statistics for all of you.
