I'm trying to use Andrew under X version 11 release 3.
I'm using the version of Andrew that from the X ./contrib directory, not
the one supplied with 4.3.
I'm running the December 1988 release of 4.3 from IBM, on an RT model 6150,
with an apa16 display adapter.
I'm using the new ibm-rt display drivers recently added to the archives at expo.
(ahem)
The problem: the programs seem to get confused about the widths of characters, or
perhaps the amount of white space that goes between words. This only seems to happen
with variable-width typefaces. The result is unreadable text - often words are
"overwritten" with blank space, or are placed too close together.
As an example, if I get into ez and try to visit a file, I get a prompt like the
following at the bottom of the screen:
Please enter the name of an initial file: /usr3/Andrew/doc
^
The cursor is between the letters 'd' and 'o', and the spacing between words is
not uniform.
For some reason I suspect that the problem is in the X display or libraries, and
not in the Andrew code itself. Can anyone confirm or deny this suspicion? Can
anyone provide a fix or workaround?
Thanks,
Keith Moore
