At our Project, NORTHSTAR, most of our RT's have only 4 Mb of memory and a bunch of our machines are IBM 6152's. This makes running messages very slow. One thing I've observed is that vui runs quick. What is the major difference between these two programs that causes such a large speed difference? The obvious difference of graphical versus terminal based interface doesn't suggest such a large speed difference to me (although I could be wrong). Are there other, major features that messages is utilizing that vui doesn't? - Anthony Edwards

I'm sure the big problem is simply memory; if you run vui, you use only a fraction of the memory you use by running Messages. On a 4 MB machine, Messages pages like crazy, which makes it slow, whereas vui can run with little or no paging, especially if you're not even running X at all. On the other hand, if you run on a machine with enough memory, vui and messages run at about the same speed. -- NB
