To: xpert@expo.lcs.mit.edu Subject: Announcing Release 4 of the X Window System from MIT Date: Wed, 03 Jan 90 16:59:31 -0500 From: jim@expo.lcs.mit.edu (Jim Fulton) The MIT X Consortium is proud to announce Release 4 of the X Window System, Version 11. Highlights of this version include: [much text edited out] o new versions of Andrew, InterViews, and Xw toolkits [more text edited out, "Andrew" includes the ODA materials as well] The software in this release is not in the public domain, but is freely available without restrictions. No license is required and there are no royalties; vendors are actively encouraged to base products upon this software. This release is available from a variety of sources, including: o the Internet and UUCP sites listed below o the MIT Software Distribution Center (address below) o and a variety of consulting/mail-order firms The software is organized into two main distributions: the core X Window System software supported by the staff of the MIT X Consortium, and user- contributed software that is provided (without support) as a public service. Sites that have access to the Internet or UUCP can retrieve the release from the location nearest them listed below. The indicated directories contain a README file with further instructions and copies of the release notes. (5) Australian sites are strongly urged not to try to get the release from the United States. "Fetchfile" may also be used to retrieve the release from the same directory. (oo) Avoid the temptation to get the release from expo.lcs.mit.edu, esp. between the hours of 9am and 6pm. Connections to expo during those hours will be subject to termination without warning. If you are unable to retrieve the release yourself, a set of four 1600bpi tapes in UNIX tar format plus printed versions of the major manuals and a copy of the new Gettys, Newman, and Scheifler book "X Window System: C Library and Protocol Reference" are available from the MIT Software Center for the following rates (prices include shipping): tapes, manuals, manuals, book book ---------- ---------- North America $125 $400 Everywhere Else $175 $500 To order, please send a letter and a check payable to MIT in US currency for the appropriate amount to: MIT Software Distribution Center Technology Licensing Office room E32-300 77 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02139 For ordering information, call the "X Ordering Hotline" at +1 (617) 258-8330. Donna Converse, Jim Fulton, Michelle Leger, Keith Packard, Chris Peterson, Bob Scheifler X Consortium MIT Laboratory for Computer Science Ralph Swick MIT Project Athena Date: 3 Jan 90 23:23:04 GMT From: rick@uunet.uu.net (Rick Adams) Subject: Re: X11R4 Distribution; EXPO is the LEAST efficient place to get the distribution. To: xpert@expo.lcs.mit.edu For those of you using or planning on using uunet.uu.net, please use ns.uu.net 192.48.96.3 ns is a 3 cpu Pyramid MIServer that is currently doing NOTHING but acting as an ftp server for X11R4. uunet will continue to carry the X distribution, but right now it's getting the living hell beat out of it, so it's to everyone's advantage to use the faster, less loaded machine (ns.uu.net). ns and uunet are on the same Ethernet which is connected to SURANET via T-1 (currently sustaining over 700 kbps since 5pm!) so there is no advantage to using uunet over ns and a big speed difference from using the unloaded ns. Thanks. ---rick To: xpert@expo.lcs.mit.edu Subject: size of R4 Date: Wed, 03 Jan 90 17:35:39 -0500 From: jim@expo.lcs.mit.edu (Jim Fulton) Here's the README file that can be ftp'ed from the various sites listed in the previous announcement. The uncompressed size of each tape is roughly 35 megabytes, and compiling adds between 50-120% depending on your architecture. * * * * * Here is a roadmap to the R4 sources: README this file RELNOTES.PS R4 release notes in PostScript RELNOTES.txt R4 release notes in plain text RELNOTES.lpt R4 release notes in lpt format R4notice R4 announcement (also where to get X) ERRATA helpful hints tape-1/ core software for X Window System (required) tape-2/ contrib clients and core doc (recommended) tape-3/ contrib libraries and other toolkits (optional) tape-4/ contrib Andrew, games, etc. (optional) The split pieces are all 512k (524288 bytes) long (except for the last one in each directory) and must be transfered in image mode (use the ftp "binary" and "mget" commands). If you are doing an "mget" you'll probably want to restart ftp with the "-i" option to prevent it from asking you about every file. Each directory contains a CHECKSUMS file containing both BSD- and SYSV-style checksums (generated with the "sum" command) and a FILES.Z file containing a compressed listing of the files stored in that directory. To extract the sources into another directory (e.g. /usr/local/src/R4/), make sure you have LOTS of disk space and type the following in each of the directories that you have copied over: % cat *.?? | uncompress | (cd /usr/local/src/R4/; tar xvf -) While you are waiting for it to finish, get lunch and read the release notes!
