I agree with Tom Clark--car rental insurance is well worth the cost. I'll add a few points: 1. Some insurance companies offer two levels of rental insurance, distinguished by the maximum allowance per day. The higher coverage is sometimes enough to cover daily rental minus mileage. 2. When renting a car when yours has been in an accident, ask if the rental agency has special rates for such cases. I've found a couple companies that gave much lower rates if it is the case that you are renting a car because yours is in the shop after an accident. I'm not sure why they give the break. Perhaps they assume you will be using the car for local driving rather than extended trips. 3. If you have rental insurance and are involved in an accident that is not your fault, your insurance company will pay for the rental and get the cost back from the other party's insurance company.
