---------- As an answer to recent submissions on legality (and perceived legality as per the 1934 Communications Act) of radar detectors, here is an excerpt from the January 1983 Car & Driver magazine, from the "For Your Information" column, p.24, by Rich Ceppos and Jean Lindamood. ---------- "Justice, etc." _______________ "Why is our staff smiling? The Michigan Supreme Court has overturned our home state's ban on radar detectors, thanks to a massive and costly effort by Electrolert, Inc., manufacturer of the Fuzzbuster radar detector. Michigan had been using a 1929 statute enacted to prevent burgulars from eavesdropping on confidential two-way police communications to justify its ban on radar detectors. Said the Supreme Court: "Words do not stand outside their history. They draw their meaning from it ... A court's responsibility when it construes a statute is to implement the purpose and intent of those who enact it." Radar Detectors remain illegal in Virginia, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C." ---------- Hope this clears up some of the misinformation and recent speculation. Happy Receptions!
