could someone explain the differences between patches 6a, 6b, and 6r?

Patch.06 was very large so we decided to split it up for your
convenience.  The actual patches are in patch.06{a,b}.  Patch.06r is the
RCS check-in logs for all the changed files.  

So, just apply patch.06a and then patch.06b in that order.
