Several people have already responded, suggesting that the SunOS sh dies
because the ENVIRONMENT is too large. Unsetting as many variables as
possible before starting the make will supposedly do the trick.

I have forwarded this suggestion on to the lucky guy who gets to do the
rebuilding.

Does anyone know if this problem persists under SunOS 4.1.1?  I know it
caused problems under 4.0.3.

I had no problems re-compiling patch-9 under SunOS 4.1.1.  (Now, making
typescript/tm work is a different matter...)

I haven't seen it under 4.1.1, and I have reason to believe some shell
bugs of that sort were, in fact, fixed in 4.1.
