[net.auto] Citation X-11

dyer (06/14/82)

Has anyone had any experience with the (soon to be unavailable)
Chevy Citation X-11? From all reports it seems to have reasonable room
along with Saab Turbo/BMW speediness while still being a USA-built
car. Has anyone had any experience with it? Or any other HO-V6
X-cars? (Or any other cars you might find in its class, for that matter.)

I'm glad to see some people still see the merit in American cars.
I have a 1980 X-11, and although it doesn't have the High Output V6,
it has loads of oomph (sp?). In fact, I seem to recall that I saw an
acceleration comparison of many cars, and the 1980 X-11 beat out the
legendary (?) Datsun 280-Z (before turbo). I have had minimal trouble
with it, having to have the thermostat for the cooling system replaced
along with the electric fan for the radiator. I've had the car for
1.5 years and it has almost 16,000 miles on it. Based on my experience,
I would buy one before they become scarce. Of course, you could probably
get all of the options that make an X-11 what is is separately if they
do decide to cancel it. Let's help get AMERICA back on its feet!!

I would avoid the Chevy Citation like the plague (these comments
pertain to the Citation in general, not the X-11 in particular).
According to Consumer Reports, they have one of the worst repair
records around. Further, one of the people I work with has a 6
month old Citation (one of the few people I know with an America
car) which seems to be constantly in the shop. His experience
has scared me--the steering went out (totally) after four months,
and the dealer took about a month to get it fixed properly. He's
had other problems with it too. He was a die-hard American car
buyer (that's why he bought the Citation), but now he's cursing
himself for not buying the Nissan/Datsun Stanza.

Moral of the story: unless you're willing to suffer grief, don't
buy American.

And furthur Re: "Lets help get AMERICA back on its feet"
Spoiling American industry and convincing them that they have
a ready market for inferior products will not make them
competitive in the world market! In California, American
cars are great because even rust doesnt rust in California.
In Canada, where we have to salt the roads because of the
continual melt-freeze of our weather in winter, American cars
typically rust out completely in 3 years. The technology
exists NOT to do that...our rabbits have lasted over 5, and
are just starting to show a little rust around the edges
WITH NOCOMMERCIAL RUSTPROOFING! When American cars
(and I include Oakville, Canada cars, since they are direct
spinoffs) can do that, I will consider buying them again.

Wee, as to the comment Buy American:
I have my second Horizon/Omni. The first one died of overage
due to use. It was in excellant shape as far as the body was concerned, but
it was going through change of life as far as mechanical parts. This at
70Kmiles. It did not have any serious mechanical problems, just things
that are exp[ected, like struts, CV joints, alternator, water pump.
and exhaust system.
I now have my second one, and I'm still happy.
Yes, it does have a VW engine, so?
OIt's cheaper tahn a rabbit, bigger than a rabbit, available th
way that you want it, not the way that VW wants it. and it
has cloth seats(I care, even if you don't.)
So---They're not all bad, just GM.

I am considering buying a Citation X-11 in the \very/ near
future. Does anyone have any experience, comments, etc., with
this car. I would appreciate any info by mail as soon as possible.

Thanks much,
