After tearing into my '77 Subaru 4WD engine to replace a slightly burned exhaust valve, I noticed that one lobe of the cam is very pitted. It looks suspiciously like a bad casting, since the lift, etc. are still within spec. The question I am faced with is: Should I replace the cam, or will it continue to work well as it has for the past ~80K miles? If I do replace the cam, should I also replace the lifters (solid lifters, again not appreciably worn), since the wear patterns on them match the old cam? I plan to drive the car for at least another 100K miles (then I'll be able to afford my Porsche 944 !??!?!). So, how about it? Any body out there got any insights to this dilemma? Please don't restrict experiences just to Subarus, any cam vs. 4 cylinder tales will help. Anxiously waiting with my Sube in a million pieces, Pat Vilbrandt John Fluke Mfg. Co., Inc.
