From weide@elephant.cis.ohio-state.edu (Bruce Weide): > I'd like to add our group to his list of those who have written formal > specifications for "real" components. Ralph, I'll send you a few > reports if you wish; just drop me a note. I wish I could cite a bunch > of papers we've had published but few people seem to want to hear what > we're trying to say. As a person who has read and enjoyed several of Ohio State CIS Research Center's technical reports, I would tend to disagree with this statement. I think the problem might be that the existence of these reports is not widely known, and I would also think that most readers of this newsgroup would be quite interested in hearing what these reports have to say. If some of the journal editors don't recognize the importance of this material, then that's an excellent reason for having an open forum such as this one, where new ideas can compete freely. Thanks for the kind words, Bill. We are still trying to get some of our ideas published, but in the interim we will be happy to send some recent TRs to anyone who is interested. All we ask is that you return the favor by sending us info you think we'd like to see, and especially things (yours or others') you think we ought to cite. Recent discussions on this newsgroup have been reaching into areas that require more attention, e.g., whether there is a need for formal specifications of reusable components. All of us may not agree, but it is important to get these questions out on the table! We welcome the opportunity for such free exchange of ideas, which is far more valuable than anonymous reviews to which there is no opportunity to respond and which therefore do little to further the cause of knowledge dissemination. (As you might have guessed, I'm a little cynical about the technical publication process. :-)) -Bruce
