A reasonable quality cassette tape deck can be used to record
300 baud transmissions. It can be wired across the phone line or
an inductive pickup on the headset can be used (but only gets one
side of the transmission).
To display the data wire directly into a modem or just put the
tape recorder over the cup on an acoustic coupler.
The limiting factor seems to be speed stability in the tape
recording, not frequency response.
I have not tried 1200 baud but I would expect the abominable phase
shifts in typical tape recordes to present real problems.

You get both sides of the conversation if you "TAP" into a
line. All you need to do is change the answer/orginate switch.
this will work best with non-direct connect modems. It should
also work upto 2400 baud with a good tape deck, and will
work upto 1200 baud with a cheap portable tape deck.
