1) What is a Semi Trailer?

According to Illinois State Law, a semi trailer is a trailer
where most of the weight of the trailer rests on the towing vehicle.
Examples: Truck tractors that pull trailers (18 wheelers).
Fifth wheel campers which are pulled behind pickup trucks.

The difference between a semi-trailer and a tractor trailer is that
the semi-trailer refers to the trailer, and tractor trailer refers to
the combination of a truck tractor and a semi trailer.

2) What is the difference between 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks?

The difference is how much they can carry. 1/2, 3/4 are used
for reference purposes only (i.e. a 3/4 ton can carry more than a 1/2
ton, etc.). To determine how much the truck can actually carry, you should
check the GAWR and the GVWR ratings. (Gross Axle and Gross Vehicle Weight
Rating) GAWR is the amount of weight that one axle (usually the rear) can
carry, and GVWR is the maximum GROSS weight of the truck (Payload + Curb weight)
As far as visual differences, there aren't any except for stronger springs
and possibly larger tires. However, the higher the weight rating, the
rougher the ride. This is something well worth your consideration
if you drive around the Chicago area. Also, the higher the weight rating,
the lower your gas mileage gets. This is because of the added weight of
heavier springs, etc.
