[alt.msdos.programmer] 3.30 vs 4.01 Poll

baalke@mars.jpl.nasa.gov (Ron Baalke) (10/27/89)

I am taking a poll on MS-DOS 3.3 vs MS-DOS 4.01. If you have used both
versions then email to me which one of the two you prefer. I will then post
the results here.

Personally, I use both. I use 3.30 on systems that I must use that don't have
a hard disk, and 4.01 on my own machine. I don't see what all the complaining
is about; I've never had any major problems with either system.

Furthermore, I think such a poll is a ridiculous waste of InterNet resources.
If you still want to use 3.30, then use it. If you like 4.01, then use it. I
don't really care, and I don't want to read this garbage any more. Until
someone can state some *REAL* problems, not just generalizations, everybody
SHUT UP!!!! There has been *far* too much said about this already.

Others, however, have reported problems with some programs (see recent post-
ings). If you have not had any problems, then that is good news for the
set of programs/utilities that you use, not a proof that others do not have
problems.

The questions here are not necessarily user-oriented, but are more programmer-
oriented. Questions like "what incompatibilities should I look out for" are
of general interest and are appropriate for a group like alt.msdos.programmer.
If you do not want to read an article, then don't. I read only a small
fraction of the postings on the net, but I don't consider the ones I don't
read to be garbage.

Everybody is interested in seeing what specific problems there are, but in
the real-world, not everyone is able to identify exactly where their problem
springs from. The great diversity of posters to the net from end-users to
gurus provides an opportunity for people to learn more than they ever would
by themselves or even within their own companies.

If every article posted here had to pass a rigid test for importance and
specificity, the net would be crippled beyond any usefulness.
