I would like to find out if anybody out there knows what type of socket fits onto the square type manual transmission plugs that you remove to inspect the fluid level. This vehicle is a 1982 Datsun pickup truck by the way. I know for a fact that a 17mm metric open end wrench fits it, but neither a 6 point or a 12 point metric 17mm socket will fit. Someone told me that a 17mm 8 point socket will do the job...Is this true? If not, what do I have to use. Extremely Perplexed, Peter Chokola Bell Laboratories Rm. # WH3E335

The problem with the 6 and 12 pt sockets is that the nut may be the same size between flats but the overall diameter isn't. Draw a square with 17-unit sides and a hexagon with a 17-unit diameter and overlay them; you'll see the difference. Not afraid of a Whitworth thread, Phil Kos University of Illinois
