[net.auto] Good buy in a new/used foreign small car? survey

foote (03/22/83)

My wife and I are in the careful process of buying our first(!) car.
After being initially overwhelmed with the possibilities, we have
narrowed it down to either a Toyota or Datsun (though we could still
consider Subaru, Mazda, or Honda if the price is right). We are
presently in love with the Toyota Tercel, though we don't know if we
can afford it.
Sooo, would you owners of such vehicles out there please send me
mail about how you would rate your car, especially in the areas of
gas milage and reliability (how often do you have to get something
repaired and for how much). Any other info that you might have would
be appreciated as well. All info of this type will be a great help
to us as we try to make a "good buy" from among the many choices in
the face of car dealers who think you should make a $4000-$5000
decision instantly. If there is enough response, I would be more
than happy to post results to the net in case there are others who
are in our position.
Consistant with what we are looking for, I would be extremely
interested in people owning the more "basic" models, those without
air conditioning, automatic transmission, etc. How do they hold up
and do you wish you would have gotten a few more things?? If you
bought your car used, what helpful hints can you give for checking
things out?
				Thanks,
				Dave Foote
