Press Release MODCOMP AND GROUPE BULL SIGN LICENSING AGREEMENT FOR MODCOMP'S REAL/IX OPERATING SYSTEM Paris/Fort Lauderdale, Fla., June 20, 1990-- Groupe Bull and MODCOMP announced today the signing of a long-term license agreement for MODCOMP's REAL/IX Operating System, the real-time implementation of the UNIX Operating System environment. Bull will integrate the REAL/IX Operating System with its B.O.S (Bull Open Software) operating environment to allow the use of B.O.S. for the development and execution of real-time applications. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. MODCOMP, a subsidary of AEG, and a premier supplier of real-time systems for more than 20 years, is the developer of REAL/IX. To make the REAL/IX Operating System the de facto real-time UNIX standard, MODCOMP recently decided to selectively license REAL/IX to strategic partner that share the open systems vision for real-time computing. In line with its internation strategy of developing partnerships to offer real-time systems users leading edge solutions, Groupe Bull has chosen to enhnance its high performance B.O.S environment with the recognized world-wide leadership of MODCOMP's REAL/IX technology. Through this alliance, Groupe Bull reaffirms its strategy of adherence to industry standards. It also guarantees users of Bull's SPIX/SPART real-time systems a path for migrating their applications to new technology, thereby assuring the protection of their investments. By associating REAL/IX with its UNIX solutions development, Groupe Bull is expanding its presence in the industrial sector. For MODCOMP, the signing of this agreement and the interest of Groupe Bull, confirm the quality of the real-time functionality of REAL/IX and its ability to respond to the needs of the market. REAL/IX uniquely combines full compliance with the System V Interface Definition (SVID) with a fully preemptive kernel that provides the fastest deterministic real-time performance of any real-time system based on the actual UNIX source code. It also offers significant enhancements in real-time critical areas such as interprocess communications, priority-based scheduling, memory management, I/O throughput, and file handling. Real-time applications involve the monitoring and control of complex systems. This requires the acquistion and processing of large numbers of data points and measurements, the handling of a large number of variables and the ability to react instantly to interrupt-driven events - without losing control of work in progress. These applications are critical, most notably, in manufacturing industries, process industries such as petrochemical, chemical, and metals, and the aerospace sector. Real-time capabilities are also essential in such sectors as energy production, transportation, and communications. The increasing automation of factories and plants, and the advent of "Just-in-Timee" production techniques are increasing the need for real-time computing. Groupe Bull, headquarted in Paris, France, is the leading European information and communication systems supplier. Operating worldwide, Bull develops, manufactures and markets platforms and solutions addressing the requirements of sectores including administration, banking, insurance, retail, and manufacturing. Group Bull is a pioneer in international standards and open systems development, and is committed to developing internation technology partnerships to meet evolving market needs. --- MODCOMP, founded in 1970, is a worldwide supplier of high-performance computer systems, products, and service for real-time applications.
