One of the more obscure muscle cars was the Ford Galaxy with their 427 SOHC installed. At the time Ford wanted to race such an engine in NASCAR type events but had to mint a small number of "stock" versions to satisfy the rulemakers. This was probably done at a terrific loss - the local Ford dealer got one in and the engine option was only $1000. My father and I took it out for a test drive and I can attest that 600+ hp in a non-handling moose like a late-60s Galaxy is an interesting experience. We lived in Montana (the speed limit was officially described as "fitting and proper"), so opening it up was no problem. I recall that 0 - 100 was < 10 sec. and 140 - 0 was approximately forever. I'd love to know if the car survived the Winter -- on second thought it probably did as I can't imagine even getting it out of the driveway with all of that semi- controlled torque. happy with my GTi Steve Crandall mhuxt!evans

Chrysler also made a very limited number of SOHC variations of the 426 Hemi. I was killing time in an airport, and saw an article in a hot rod-type magazine about a guy who has one in some innocuous Chrysler Co. car, like a Valiant or Dart or something. He likes to play "stump the gear-heads" with it at his local street-racing hang-out. No one can figure out what kind of engine it is apparently. Bob Schleicher BTL, Naperville, Ill. ihuxk!rs55611
