[comp.realtime] DNS vs. The VxWorks Archive

thor@thor.atd.ucar.edu (Richard Neitzel) (10/05/90)

Please be aware of the following problem effecting return email
addresses of requests sent to the archive server.

All systems at NCAR use the Domain Name Service (DNS). This allows us
to find the name/IP addr. of most systems connected to the Internet.
However, this means that in order to get your mail returned to the
proper place, you must be certain that your return address uses the
fully qualified host name. For example, my base system is
thor.atd.ucar.edu, not thor. As an example of what will occur if you
send unqualified names, the server recently got 2 requests from:

  bd@tiros

Unfortunately, since this is an unqualified name, it ended up being
  mailed to:

  bd@tiros.atd.ucar.edu

As a result the mail bounced and bd@tiros is probably wondering why
the requests were never serviced. Please check the output of your
mailer and make certain that fully qualified names are output!
