Chris Little's problem indicates just how sensitive later engines are to mixture; this is mostly due to the technique of using lean mixtures to help combustion to reduce emissions; sounds to me like he was lucky to find it at all, but as an aside, a cheap little vacuum gauge can be extremely helpful in chasing idle roughness since the most common cause is loss of vacuum somewhere. Most vacuum gauges can also be used for low pressure, like fuel pump, so they turn out to be very useful. ernie harkins
