[comp.realtime] Far distributed real-time in flight control

fs_reise@rcvie.co.at (Christian Reiser) (06/21/91)

Hi all,
I am doing some research in the area of real-time computing
and I am working on the special issue of far distributed real-time,
which means larger real-time systems than i. g. factory plants.

So now I am searching for literature of similar applications. What
I have found, was the special issue of the Advanced Automation
System (AAS) (a flight control system) of the U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration in IEEE Computer Feb. 87 and some articles about the
same topic in IEEE Spectrum Feb. 91, but what I am looking for, are
more real-time related papers on this subject.

Besides this, I have heard about EUROCONTROL, a flight control system
used in some parts of north-west Europe, but I could find nothing
about it.

If you have any hints for me, please e-mail, since I do not receive
rec.aviation here. I will provide a summary in both groups.

Greetings from Vienna/Austria

I don't have any specific references, but I know of two good resources:

   1. Contact anyone doing work on the IVHS (Intelligent Vehicle Highway
System) project. The primary groups (forgive me if I've omitted your
favorite university here) are at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
and University of California at Berkeley. I am not sure who the contact
would be at Berkeley, but at Michigan, you can talk to Professor
Kang Shin in the EECS department.

   2. I remember reading a paper that came out of the MIT robotics lab (I'm
not sure of the exact name-- perhaps someone from MIT could supply a
contact) that dealt with geographically distributed real-time systems.

Both of these research groups are likely to have done some research that
will be of use to you. The robotics paper I remember reading had something
to do with remotely controlled robots in outer space.

Good Luck!

I too have just hooked into this group.
I am also doing some research in the area of real-time computing
and I am working on the special issue of far distributed
real-time, which means larger real-time systems.

Thanks in advance,

EUROCONTROL is flight control CENTRE located near Maastricht, Netherlands.
I have no knowledge about their actual system, but it is single SITE, and
it handles most of European air-space. (At least that is what it is
supposed to do.) Its area is from Greece to Ireland, from Portugal to
Germany. Not (to my knowledge) in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland (Northern
Europe that is).

  Sorry, EuroControl wasn't for you.
