43rd Edinburgh Film Festival (12-27 August, 1989) I just got the programme for this. I thought the rest of the world might be interested, as many of the films might come your way in the next year or so, and at least one film festival's committee thought they were worth seeing. They put this programme together in a helluva rush. Lots of it is wrong - in particular, many of the foreign names seem to me to be misspelt, but I can't usually correct this. I did get "Hpuce Benahckuu" right, I think. Not a lot: some of Franta, SALO, BAD TASTE, THE NEEDLE (which features Petr Mamonov of the Moscow existential rock band Zvuki Mu, and anybody who's seen that act won't want to miss him on film), PLAFF!, HOLY BLOOD (by the man who made EL TOPO), BUILDING BOMBS, FOREVERMORE, A FILM ABOUT PROSTITUTION and NOSFERATU. There are lots of others that I expect to come back over the next year, so I'm in no rush to see them now. I'm curious about A TIME OF VIOLENCE, which is about the forced Islamization of part of Bulgaria in the 17th century. From the blurb it may well be intended to incite Slav Bulgarians against Turkish Bulgarians, and possibly the most politically unpleasant film the festival has shown for years. Things you couldn't pay me to see: GONE WITH THE WIND, THE MIKADO, WINGS OF THE MORNING, and HENRY V (betcha they have a minute's silence In Memory Of A Great Actor; the old fart will compost well enough without my added reverence). Can't get to any of the interesting animation shows; DAMN. Why are there so few films by women? Where have the Japanese vanished to?
