[net.auto] Chrysler ballast resistors

Now that we seem to have beaten VW warm-start problems into the ground,
I'd like to bring up a new topic for diagnosis.

My father has a 1978 Newport which eats ballast resistors with
incredible regularity. I'd guess one every six months or so. When I
was at an auto parts store recently, I asked if this was common and got
the answer "all Chryslers do it. When I had a Plymouth, I kept a spare
in my glove box." When I asked what caused it, the answer was "Idunno."

Now. My family has owned Cryslers since before I was born. All have
been excellent, reliable transportation-- until this one. His '79
Cordoba has been no problem. Anybody know why this thing burns out its
ballast resistors?
