conscientious mechanics prime the pump when assembling a new motor, to the extent of pushing oil out the pushrods, ie, bottom to top; you can prime just the pump with a long screwdriver on most engines, by taking out the distributor and putting the screwdriver in the slot on top of the pump, and twisting it by hand (either way actually, since they are straight cut gears) until you notice a substantial increase in the effort it takes to twist the screwdriver; that primes the pump proper, but the hardcore will do the same thing with a drill until the pushrods start oiling... that's a bit easier than taking the pan off to put vaseline in it, no? ernie harkins

when priming a gear type oil pump it MUST be driven in the proper direction as it will simply pump the other way when reversed. If it is driven in the reverse direction it will simply pull air down from the engine oil system and bubble it through the oil sump. So when you prime your pump circes!harkins is correct but please make sure you spin the pump the right way!!!!!! Keith Bauer White Tiger Racing
