[bionet.journals.contents] Software for searching journal contents lists

MARDER%HUJIAGRI@PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU (Jonathan Marder) (10/23/90)

Hi,
Does anyone out there have anything for fishing out individual references
from the journal contents lists. I want something to (routinely) pull out
references related to my subject area by searching for certain keywords in
the title. I also want to use it for preparing a specialized contents page
for the Photosynthesis Researchers' List (PHOTOSYN@TAUNIVM.BITNET).
My preference is for a VAX/VMS package and I may try and write
one if necessary. I will also consider packages for VM/CMS or the humble
PC. What a pity that the LISTSERV database package treats each journal
issue as a single entry - I would be very happy to use the LISTSERV
database functions if the BIO+JRNL database could be organised in the
appropriate form.
    Thanks for any help,
    Jonathan Marder <MARDER@HUJIAGRI.BITNET>

If you are receiving Journals by mail you can EXTRACT to a FILE
Let's say GENMIRCO.JRL. As each new article comes in you can EXTRACT/APPEND
to GENMICRO.JRL.

You can then use the SEARCH command on VAX to look for hits on various
subjects.for example:-

$ search GENMICRO.JRL photosyn/window=4

This will look through the whole file and pick out all the entries
with the string photosyn in it, and display four lines of context around
that word.

Not very elegant... but then what do you want for nothing:-)
