POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION -- ISIS PROJECT, CORNELL UNIVERSITY

The ISIS project has funds for a renewable 1 to 2 year post-doctoral research
position starting in summer or fall of 1990. Applications from qualified
candidates are invited. The project is concerned with the development of
software tools for building robust distributed software, and applications
taking advantage of these tools. Our work combines theory and practice,
hence the successful candidate should have a good background in both areas
of distributed systems research.

As a member of the ISIS group, the candidate will also consult with other
group members and participate in setting the longer-term directions for
the project. The candidate will be expected to participate in the ongoing
activities of the project and/or to define a new research direction that
balances the implementation of an idea with a more abstract treatment of the
issues. Presentation of the results in conferences and papers is expected.

Current interests of the effort include development of very high performance
and large scale versions of the ISIS Toolkit, distributed application
management, large-scale distributed database integration, and realtime sensor
and actuator management. There is also some interest in applying ISIS
to closely-coupled MP environments.

ISIS supports a variety of programming languages, including C, C++, and
several dialects of LISP. The candidate should have extensive familiarity
with, and enjoy, developing software using one or more of these languages.

This position is nominally intended for a recent PhD who wishes to gain
additional experience in an academic setting before taking a permanent
position in academics or an industrial research lab. However, the ISIS
Project currently employs one full time Research Associate, and it may be
possible to convert this new post-doctoral position into a longer-term
appointment upon expiration of the initial term.
