[comp.sys.isis] Beta-testing ISIS V2.0, Re: ISIS V1.3.1 bug reports

ken@gvax.cs.cornell.edu (Ken Birman) (03/07/90)

[ Follow-up on bug reports is at the end of this]

I have gotten many inquiries about availability of the V2.0
documentation (online and manuals) and the possibility of
beta-testing ISIS V2.0. Here's the "scoop":

V2.0 documentation and the manual should be available from us
around March 15. It will be fairly complete by then, but there
will be corrections and revisions during the beta-test period.
I'll post information for those of you who use FTP; if you want
printed copies of the manual email to sla@cs.cornell.edu. There
will be a fee, probably $20/copy. The manual lists differences
w.r.t V1.3.1, but there should be no outright incompatibilities.

Our alpha-testing has gone about as smoothly as I might have
expected, but we are still finding many bugs. It is unavoidable
that this version of the system will be fairly fragile at the start.
By the time we do the general release (currently planned for the end
of April) I expect that any major problems will have been eliminated.
Also, we are still testing mostly under SUN OS 4.0.3 on sparc stations,
so there could be many problems on our systems at this stage. We
will certainly pound on ISIS under other systems before the general
release, but not in time for the beta release.

The planned Beta release date is currently March 15. It should include
the bypass code, an early version of the isis_remote interface, and
the process list interface. It will probably come with a list of "known
bugs"... right this instant, that list would be fairly short.

My goal is to have a small number of beta-sites that know what they
are doing and have used ISIS for a while. If you wish to be a beta
site, please email to me:
  1) Prior experience with ISIS. I have no interest in having inexperienced
users reporting bugs... (If I already know you, no need to do this).
  2) Systems on which you run. Are you willing to fix the compilation
messages and email me the fixes? Will it bother you if you end
up picking up the system every week or so for a while?
  3) Easy FTP access to Cornell?

--- Re: ISIS V1.3 bug reports

The two recent bug reports concerning ISIS V1.3.1 actually
referred to ISIS V1.2 in one case and ISIS V1.3.0 in the other. Both
problems were corrected in ISIS V1.3.1 (released Oct. 1989.)
If you have problems similar to the ones that were posted, check to
see if your top-level ISIS source directory is named "isisv1.3.1"
as opposed to "isisv1.3". If not, FTP the system over again and
rebuild it; this should eliminate any problems you were seeing.
If it doesn't drop us a note.

TC's MIPS UDP packets from outer space remain a mystery to me.
