[comp.sys.isis] ISIS V3.0 status

ken@gvax.cs.cornell.edu (Ken Birman) (10/19/90)

I've had a few inquiries regarding the status of the ISIS V3.0 release
from IDS. These seem to be of two flavors: asking when it will be out,
and asking what bugs we've identified in V2.1 so far.

1) V3.0 will probably not be ready for another 2 months or so. Internally,
we've been testing some aspects of it and expect to be playing with the
full system shortly. But, work on some critical parts of the system were
delayed by a non-ISIS event and I'm only just getting back to this now.
Meanwhile, preparing the IDS mailings and drafting the basic sale/support
contract has gone more slowly than expected, too.

2) In addition to the resource manager program, V3.0 will have the pg_client
extensions (to run via bypass mode), an enhanced version of isis_remote (runs
almost as fast as when you connect via isis_init), support for diffusion
group multicast, and a few bug fixes. These include a problem that can cause
a core dump when cancelling an isis_select or during client "log" creation
(but only if you use both isis_select and isis_input), a bug with the "f"
option to a bypass cbcast or bcast, fixes to the interface with X11 under
Openlook (the business of "input hints" Tim posted), and a few other minor
or obscure problems that most people couldn't trigger if they tried.
This are actually all pretty minor: so far, V2.1 seems to have been largely
trouble-free.
