[comp.sys.isis] ISIS v2.2 and v3.0....when and which order

rdm@cernapo (Alphonse Rademakers) (05/16/91)

Hi,
I've been hearing about things being fixed in v3.0 that will be propagated
into v2.2. What is the status of these two versions. Is version v2.2 the last
"free" version and will v3.0 become a comercial product or is v2.2 an
intermediate version and v3.0 the big new version with many improvements? Will
v3.0 still be "free"?

Cheers, Fons Rademakers.

V3.0 is the commercial version. You can purchase it now, if you want it,
from Isis Distributed Systems. Email to ids@cs.cornell.edu for info.

V2.2 will be V2.1 with some bugs fixed and will be the last free version
from Cornell. Until we have some time to create this release people will
just have to manage with V2.1. Our problem is that Cornell has switched
tracks to a major new research effort (an integration of ISIS into the
Mach and Chorus O/S) and we don't have resources anymore to do free
releases. V2.2 will not include most of the new performance features and
interfaces that have been described for V3.0 and beyond.

In the long run, Cornell is going out of the "active support for ISIS"
business, although anything we do up here will still be made available in
some form for public consumption. We just don't have enough money to
hire people to provide "free" support....
