In a recent posting to bionet.software, Kay Hofmann expressed some frustration with what he called "these unix-tar.Z archives" and asks if there is a utility available to decode these files under VMS. The files with a .Z suffix are not tar archives. They are merely compressed, using the standard UNIX compress utility. None of the filenames have "tar" in them; none of the readme.doc files speaks of "tar". The VMS executable, pub/vms/lzdcmp.exe, can be used under the VMS operating system to uncompress the .Z files found in our ftp archive area. It works for our users, although you must be using one of the more current versions of VMS.
