Begining a week or two ago, daily updates to the GenBank database have been posted to the newsgroup bionet.molbio.genbank.updates by the Bionet staff. Unix-based software to take these postings and integrate the data contained therein into a local copy of the GenBank database is now available. This software has been developed at the Public Health Research Institute, and is available via anonymous ftp from goober.phri.nyu.edu (128.122.136.10). We are working on finding other ways to distribute the software as well. The genbank-over-news project is the result of a collaborative effort with Dave Kristofferson, Eliot Lear and the staff at Intelligenetics, and Ross Smith, Suzy Gottesman, and Lara Schulmann at the New York University Medical Center (who have written similar software to run under VMS; see <6919.260107ac@mcclb0.med.nyu.edu> for details). At the PHRI end, Brent Hobbs did most of the Unix programming. Note that the software currently on goober is being distributed for the first time outside of PHRI. That's a polite way of saying it's in beta test, so we don't promise everything will work as well as it should. We are anxious to receive problem reports or any other feedback you may have to help us improve the software. Also note that the software is being distributed free of charge, so we are not responsible for anything going wrong, and we also prohibit any commercial use of the software without prior consent of the PHRI. -- Roy Smith, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016 roy@alanine.phri.nyu.edu -OR- {att,philabs,cmcl2,rutgers,hombre}!phri!roy "My karma ran over my dogma"
