I am glad to know that the esteemed president of DEC has such a clear understanding of the issues in operating systems and the difference between Unix and VMS. It is this that makes competition possible. -- Jon Mauney, mcnc!ncsu!mauney * Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn whether Unix, VMS, and DEC are trademarks.

The beauty of Unix is that it is only a short time to look up a command, and if you don't find it, you can make it yourself. And I would think that more than 10% of the VAXes out there run UNIX or some derivative thereof. Where dod he get that figure from??? Walt Pesch AT&T Technologies ihnp4!ihuxp!wbpesch

I think DEC makes a great mini-computer series, but their operating system has always Blown the Big Wind. ...akgua!lanierrnd!bing

If this is a sample of the thinking of DEC's top management, it is no wonder that DEC is in serious trouble. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry

While DEC charges a pretty good deal for VMS and its associated software, source code, etc, I doubt if they get any $$$$ for Unix, especcialy the BSD version. AT&T gets licencing rights for Version V, but no DEC. So DEC's president's letter could be interpreted as "Since we are not making any money out of Unix, DON'T BUY IT!!" Performance-wise, having used both VMS and BSD 4.2, Unix is FAR more superior and flexible... VMS is too restrictive (although it has "Five feet of Documentation"). It is faster, we have to admit that, but that's it... now the price difference.......
