I hear from relatively unreliable sources that new and much faster net facilities are on the way; something called National Science Network. Can anyone enlarge on that? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joe Hanus | E-MAIL hanusj@bionette.cgrb.orst.edu Microbial Germplasm Database | hanusj@orstvm (bitnet) Dept. of Botany and Plant Pathology | Phone (503)-737-5300 Oregon State University | FAX (503)-737-3045 Corvallis, OR 97331-2902 | ______________________________________________________________________________

Joe, There is much discussion under way about NREN, the National Research and Education Network, including tlak about upgrading the speed of the NSFNET backbone. An article about the last developments appeared in Science a few issues back (sorry but I don't have accesss to any right now). Perhaps someone at NSF has some information in electronic form that they could post to this newsgroup. Dave Kristofferson

<previous post about proposed high speed network Up on Compu$erve in the TELECO area there is an archive on this subject. It is a bill before the 102nd Congress which describes the purpose, proposed allocation etc. for the new network. Type "go TELECO" and snoop around the network libraries; try searching on NREN* <Chip Gallo>
