My '77 Honda Accord runs well and gets 33-35 MPG for local driving. However, the CVCC engine seems to run very lean and exhibits noticeably improved acceleration with the manual choke on even after the engine is warm. This leads me to believe that I can expect better performance by enlarging the primary metering jet in the carb but with some sacrifice in emissions and MPG. Since Honda does not sell jets for their carbs, I must carefully drill out my present jet. Have any of you auto guros tried this on similar small four-cylinder engines? What percentage diameter increase should I try? How will this impact mileage? Can an increase in carb float level provide the equivalent mixture enrichment (and be undoable as well)?
