[net.auto] Torque

A motorcycle I had long ago (Yamaha 125 Enduro) had torque vs. rpm plotted
in the manual. It also had torque vs. mph with separate curves for each
gear. That was a great help in learning the engine at the time - why don't
cars come with such information?

On the subject of torque vs. horsepower: why should torque (at the engine)
matter much? Peak torque, that is. An engine with lots of torque in the low
rpms would just need higher gearing than one with less torque but higher
horsepower, no? Now, I fully realize the advantage of a wide power range
(ie: a broad curve in the aforementioned graph, which my bike didn't have).
This wide ragne would show up on either a torque or horsepower graph. But
who cares about peak torque? (Peak horsepower is only somewhat more meaningful)
I'd rather see "average horsepower 2000-6000 rpm" or the like in a spec.
(choose range appropriate for transmission on given car). Or a graph, as above.
I guess 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc. timings will have to do.

My 1968 Datsun 2000 manual had hp/rpm, torque/rpm,
gpm/rpm (gallons of fuel per minute) (under some standard conditions),
and max grade climbable/rpm (for each gear) graphs.
They were indeed useful.
