[alt.activism] Usenet access to Econet, Greennet and others

paul@frcs.UUCP (Paul Nash) (12/05/90)

I am a member of the Pretoria branch of EarthLife Africa, a South African
environmental activism group. We are non-racist, -sexist, -ageist, and
work with activists in other fields.

We would like to gain access to EcoNet and similar networks, such
as Greenpeace's Greennet. However international dial-up links are
prohibitively expensive, which makes it extremely difficult. We
have a local UUCP-based network, linking various commercial and
privately-owned machines, and a TCP/IP-based network for the
Universities. We have about three UUCP dial-up links to the USA,
and use these for news and mail.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to get EcoNet, GreenNet and
other environmentalist or activist systems gateway'ed to UUCP mail?
I currently subscribe to Rich Winkel's ACTIV-L mailing list, which
gets burst into a local newsgroup very successfully.

I have sent mail to bleland@cdp.UUCP (who, I believe, is the director
of EcoNet). Is there anyone else whom I can contact, either at Eco-
and PeaceNet, or at GreenNet? Is anyone currently running such a
gateway (other than Rich's [manual] PeaceNet -> ACTIV-L gateway)?
Are there any other networks that I should try to contact? If so,
please mail (or post) contact names and e-mail addresses.

All responses will be valued, and if I get any useful information
(and especially if such a gateway is feasable) I will pass it on.

paul
