An example of the disassemble/reassemble-and-which-one-is-the-real-one question is this network itself. I am writing this note, which I consider to be the 'real' one. It is duplicated and transmitted to many sites in many copies. I maintain that the real one is still here! If it is deleted after it has been transmitted, then the real one is gone, and only copies are left. Even if the copies are the same as the original, and cannot be distingished, I maintain that the destuction of the original is a separate event from the creation of the copies. Even if each bit of the original is destroyed just after (or even simultaneously with) the creation of each bit in the copy/ies. Imagine that you step into the "Star Trek" transporter. They "energize" and you feel a bit tingly, but nothing happens. Then your voice comes over the radio and says "O.K., I've arrived safely." Then the transporter chief takes out his phasor and disintegrates you. _____ Harvey Newstrom (hnewstrom@x102a.harris-atd.com) (uunet!x102a!hnewstrom)
