I think that many of the far-ranging complexities and problems that people point out can be summarized under the category of general communications break-downs. Indeed, I would say that this is the definitive critical issue. With the fabrication capabilities implied by functional NT our ability to communicate with who/what we wish to may be severely impaired (at least our ability to discern proper communications). We see ever-increasing problems of this sort today. As our communications handling abilities have advanced our abilities to communicate conceptualizations and intents seem to be decreasing. My simple NT dream would be to travel to the stars exploring new sensory phenomena and stellar objects. Others would conclude that to be old-fashioned and would aspire to being an anolog intelligence in a micro-environ where they could create whatever simulations they desire and 'pirate' other 'beings' as they will. I really believe the communications issues are the most frightening and the 'Hard-wiring' to be trivial in comparison. About two years ago, those of us involved in the Seattle NSG went a retreat (similiar to the MIT one) in a cabin in the woods with Eric and his wife. Some of the more 'Flaky' concepts we mused about was the idea of setting up an 'Inheritance Day'. This would be the day when all the citizens of the solar system would be given a plot of said system to do with as they will subject to the constraint that they couldn't infringe upon the rights of neighbors. We also discussed about 4 different ways to police this new era, including ultra AI. One of Eric's major concerns was stated to be the expansion by galactic civilizations at a healthy fraction of the speed of light, which seems inevitable as we approach the 'Limits of possibility' I apologize if people have already seen this plug but I didn't notice it in any of the recent postings; For a copy of the NANOCON I proceedings mail 15$ to; NANOCON Box 40176 Bellevue, WA 98004 (washington state residents add $1.14 sales tax) Steve 'Spike' Salkovics, humble president- Student NSG Uof W ["Inheritance Day" is advanced to forestall the tactic which might be adopted by some groups under a conventional democracy of increasing their population in order to claim a greater proportion of overall resources. --JoSH]
