In this episode, Wesley experiments with "nannites", tiny mechanical
critters that are used for microsurgery "gigabytes of mechanical
memory". He put two of them together somehow to basically allow them to
evolve. While pulling an all-nighter, he falls asleep and two of his
experiments go on an expedition of their own. This is the point where
the show starts (we find out what happened via reconstruction). The
nannites find that the main computers are a wealth of raw materials and
have a feeding frenzy, causing the Enterprise computers to have fits,
jeopardizing the lifetime work of an ex-"whiz-kid" scientist. This
work will come to fruition with the monitoring of a stellar explosion
at close hand. These explosions occur once every 196 years.
Eventually, Data is able to communicate with them and negotiate a
truce, including giving them a planet to colonize.
