In the past, comments have been made concerning a "Lack of discussion Topics", so I finally got up the guts to post somthing. This is another situation where someone voluteers to toss an idea out and see if it sparks some "real heated discussion". I just finished reading "Midnight" by Dean R. Koonz over the Holidays, and feel it is a good example of 'primitive nanotechnology (sort of) applied to a fiction novel. The book is a horror/suspense/sf/thriller that paints a "worst case scenario" of a nanotech experiment gone wrong. In "Midnight", Koonz has the human "guinea pigs" injected with thousands of VERY VLSI Micro- computer "spheres" (instead of nano machines) that travel to pre-programmed parts of the body and take up residence. Once in place, and powered by beamed microwave power, the micro-spheres perform a lot of the functions that the nano-level machines discussed in this group could perform regarding control and augmentation of the host's bodily functions. The technology used is not exactly up to nano-spec (yeech!, how does one say this?), and the spheres are not molecular assemblers or self replicating, but the concept and resulting story make it a book worth reading. -- .Steve Pirk.................Voice: (714) 952-5516......................... ..McDonnell Douglas M&E..Internet: pirk@sysqq.mdcbbs.com.................. ...5701 Katella Ave..........UUCP: uunet!sysqq!pirk....................... ....Cypress, CA. 90630........PSI: PSI%31060099980019::SYSQQ::PIRK........ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The opinions expressed herein, are probably not those of MDC, and I'm not sure if I can even call them mine.......?"
