[net.auto] Query on add-on Cruise Control

pwv@fluke.UUCP (07/11/83)

I have just purchased a '77 GMC G20 Van that my wife and I will be driving
for our vacation this summer from Washington (state) to Wisconsin and back
again. The van does not have cruise control, but I'd guess that it would
be a very welcome addition for our 4000+ mile trip.

Question:

Has anyone had any experience with the installation and/or use of one
of the `add-on' type of cruise controls that most "automotive" stores
offer? Would I run into any surprises in trying to install one in this
van? (van has 350 c.i.d. V-8 with quadra-jet (GM tm) carb. and auto
    tranny)

We're leaving on July 26, so reply soon, (by mail) please!

P.S. I will summarize any and all responses to the net since I have never
seen this topic discussed here before (Gee, there actually might be
something to discuss in this newsgroup besides air-bags (wind-?) and
     radar-defectors (oops, detectors))

I have a friend who has installed several add on cruise controls and he
seemed to find the Sears unit to be about the best. The Sears unit sold
several years ago was made by the same company that produced the units for
General Motors and so they were identical except the GM unit sensed from
the speedometer cable while the Sears unit sensed magnets attached to
the drive shaft. The Sears unit had more features than the original
equipment GM unit allowing you to increase speed by just pushing a button
or allowing you to slow down for a moment and then resume your old speed.
I find these very desirable as my Trans-Am won't do these things and it
is a pain to reset the thing every time I have to slow down for someone.

You should have no trouble with the installation and the clamp on control
that goes on the turn signal shaft almost looks original!

I have installed the ZT11 cruise control on my Volvo 1800ES(auto. trans) and
my 3/4 ton International Harvester 4x4(5-speed). The installation took about
a half a day on each vehicle, the truck being the easiest since there is lots
of room to work. The only problem I had was getting a vacuum source. I don't
have air conditioning on either car.

I think that the manufacturer is ZEMCO or something like that. I no longer
have the box it came in and all the literature is nameless(probably because
they supply to Sears and the like). I bought them on sale at one of the
local discount houses for about 55 dollars each. I have seen them for as
high as $69.

The speed pickup comes from some magnets you strap to the drive line. You have
to mount a coil pretty close (3/8-1/2") to the magnets and that gave me a
little trouble on the Volvo. The control head is a small module with three
buttons on it. It has the accelerate/decelerate and coast/resume functions.

I also put Cibie quartz halogen headlights on both cars. They are great for
Oregon weather!
