[sci.nanotech] '91 Graduate Student Summer Interns at Xerox

merkle@parc.xerox.com (Ralph Merkle) (12/06/90)

Each year, Xerox' Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in California and
Webster Research Center (WRC) in New York offer 50-60 summer research
positions. We are now inviting all highly qualified graduate students
to apply to our 1991 Summer Intern Program. This year, positions are
available in the following projects:

PARC: distributed computing; information retrieval; resource allocation;
compiling for garbage collection; alternative architectures; high speed
ATM switches; online handwriting recognition; machine-printed text
recognition; game theory; graphical user interfaces; multicast algorithms
& applications; equation recognition & formatting; collaborative
technologies; higher-order constraint languages; computational geometry;
parallel sparse matrixes; performance modeling; network routing;
computational nanotechnology & molecular modeling; audio editor/browsers;
color science, digital color systems and color printing; network pricing
& incentives; graphical visualization; graphical editors; image & visual
texture analysis; two-handed interfaces; handprint identification;
multi-user editors & window systems; distributed document storage &
conversion; design & analysis of high-speed LANs; and communications
facilities for wireless LANs.

WRC: analysis of algorithms for graphical layout & imaging;
constraint-based reasoning systems; distributed systems architecture
& design; color document creation & editing; structure-directed editors;
color imaging & printing; models & measurements of color image quality;
high bandwidth image storage & transmission; user interfaces for document
databases; graphical representations of numerical data; applications of
mathematical programming methods to graphical layout; high-speed
rasterization algorithms; applications of attribute grammars to document
description; digital typography; and document recognition.

Please send a resume stating your academic history and interests, and
provide at least two letters of recommendation from faculty members or
work supervisors. Applications and references may be submitted via
plain-text electronic mail, fax, or postal mail. All information must
arrive by February 15, 1991.

Unofficial Addenda:

The computational nanotechnology and molecular modeling project, at
PARC, will involve designing and modeling various structures on a
Silicon Graphics workstation, primarily using molecular mechanics.
Structures will be selected based on their projected long range
utility in molecular manufacturing. Candidate structures might
include rod logic, molecular bearings, etc. The primary requirements
for applicants are ability, interest, and an understanding of
computational chemistry.
