[sci.chem] Summary: compounds with temperature-dependent UV/VIS spectrum

bk7295@leah.Albany.Edu (Brian A. Kell) (09/08/90)

Thanks to those who responded to my request for information. We got two
very different, but very good suggestions for cheap and easy compounds
whose UV/VIS spectra are temperature-dependent:

1) Use a temperature-sensitive buffer (e.g. TRIS) combined with a pH
indicator dye.

2) Use DNA (which can be obtained cheaply in crude form). The absorbance
of DNA at 260nm is dependent on temperature an salt concentration, and
is due to the equilibrium between single- and double-stranded forms.

The net comes through again!
