Thanks to those who responded to my request for information. We got two very different, but very good suggestions for cheap and easy compounds whose UV/VIS spectra are temperature-dependent: 1) Use a temperature-sensitive buffer (e.g. TRIS) combined with a pH indicator dye. 2) Use DNA (which can be obtained cheaply in crude form). The absorbance of DNA at 260nm is dependent on temperature an salt concentration, and is due to the equilibrium between single- and double-stranded forms.
