It is a flammable liquid, and is available from laboratory chemical suppliers. For further "reality", add some 1,1-thiochlorobutene (dimethylallyl sulfide). This substance may not be readily available and may require some custom synthesis >It is likely to be quite a complex compound and I am really interested in >copying its aversive properties. While the precise composition may be complex, skunk odor can be well approximated using just the above two ingredients. Larry Lippman @ Recognition Research Corp. "Have you hugged your cat today?" If the objective is the odor and not the experience of synthesis, you might want to try your local outdoor/hunting store. I noticed that my local gun store was carrying what is billed as genuine skunk odor for use as a human scent masker for deer hunting. It's multi-barrier packaging leads me to believe that it is the real stuff. I'll probably grab a bottle on my next trip. I can think of some, ahem, interesting things to do with this stuff. :-) John -- John De Armond, WD4OQC | "Purveyors of speed to the Trade" (tm) Rapid Deployment System, Inc. | Home of the Nidgets (tm) Marietta, Ga | {emory, uunet}!rsiatl!jgd |"Politically InCorrect.. I created the IUPAC name from scratch, after thinking about 1-chloro-2-butene (methylallyl chloride), which I have encountered. Obviously, I forgot to omit the chlorine! Also, upon further reflection, I had omitted some IUPAC "trimmings". So, let's try this again for a IUPAC designation: 1,1'-thiobis[2-butene] IUPAC nomenclature notwithstanding, the substance may also be referred to by the following: dimethylallyl sulfide dimethallyl sulfide dicrotonyl sulfide dicrotyl sulfide Isn't organic nomenclature just fun? :-) Larry Lippman @ Recognition Research Corp.
