[net.auto] Help for grinding gears

kurtk@tektronix.UUCP (Kurt Krueger) (08/05/83)

I have a 1972 240-z that is hard to shift. The specific symtoms
are: most of the time it just shifts hard; some times you will feel
a few teeth slip as the gears engage; sometimes the gears really grind.
The clutch IS properly adjusted and SEEMS to disengage.

I can see the following as possible causes and would
appreciate any help as to how to identify the culprit before
I start taking things apart. I certainly don't want to dismantle
the transmission unless necessary.

1. Dragging clutch

2. Shot syncros

3. Frozen pilot bearing

4. ???????? (fill in the blank if you have any ideas)

The car has 130k miles and is still on the original clutch.
The transmission has never been touched except for oil changes.

Do you have trouble with the car stopped? If so, I'd look at the
clutch; if not, the syncros. My first guess would be the syncros.
