I have a 1982 Audi Coupe - the front wheels are continuously turning black with dust from the disc brakes. I've found no easy way to keep the alloy wheels clean. The best I've been able to do is EVERY WEEK go in with brush and some semi-gritty cleaner (would you belive AJAX cleanser?). It's just a pain, I'm probably ruining the wheels, etc. Apparently many VW/Audi/Porsche owners have the same problem. Any hints?

I've heard that a product called "Turbo Wheel Cleaner" works well. To prevent the problem certain varieties of dust jackets which fit between the wheel and flange and do not shroud the brakes too much are ok too. Joseph L. Wood, III ABI Holmdel (201) 834-3759 ariel!jlw

The problem of alloy wheels getting dirty was brought up in one of the recent auto mags (I think). Their suggestion was to take your wheels to a place that cleans wheels with a sandblaster. As soon as you get them back (wrapped in plastic) you coat them well with varnish or acrylic. After this, a simple hosing off and maybe some soap and water should clean off any junk.
