A couple of months ago I asked for help with an intermittent hotstart problem with my 77 Datsun (when the engine was hot, it cranked over some and wouldn't start). Well, today I got frustrated enough (at the continuance of the problem and my lack of time to deal with it) to roll into Sears for an electrical system check, for which they charge only $5. Turns out the Diehard battery is fine, the cabling is fine, the alternator and engine ditto, but the starter drew 300 amps trying to crank hot. Diagnosis: old, tired starter... One hour and $102 later I have a healthy starter in place and I think that will probably take care of it. (Sheesh, I hope so!) Thanks again to everyone who offered advice.
